Bourette silk, also known as raw silk, is made from the shorter silk fibers left over during the production of smooth silk, such as mulberry silk. This gives Bourette silk a matte and irregular texture, resulting in a rustic and crisp appearance that still feels soft and pleasant against the skin. Bourette silk tends to feel slightly warmer and more breathable than smooth silk.
This silk takes dye beautifully. Since the yarn contains both short and long fibers, as well as possible small cocoon remnants, the color appears slightly uneven or heathered, enhancing the truly stunning hand-dyed look.
The yarn is perfect for summer knits, scarves, shawls, and much more. It is also well-suited for children’s and baby garments, and is completely itch-free.
